Weddings mean a lot to me. You might be saying, of course they do Elena – weddings are your job! But I try to catch myself when I start to think only of the work I associate with being a wedding photographer: the meetings, the shot lists, the timelines, and of course the stresses that sometimes get funneled in my direction. What I mean is that weddings mean a lot to me because of what they represent in the larger scheme of things: love, happiness, and a celebration of being alive.
Weddings are a part of every culture, and I find a thrill in the possibility that a wedding photo can tell a larger story about something as simple as being human. What does it look like to be in love? What does family mean to different people? What caused a spark between two souls in a world of billions? Every year I ask myself what I’m really looking for at weddings, and it has to come back to the idea of something authentic, something real, something palpable, something that transcends the one day full of checklists and expectation. When it’s all said and done, love is all we have left, and that’s what I’m always hoping to capture.
It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again already- the time I look back on all that happened in my work and put together my Year in Review. It seems I rarely have much time for reflection during the year, and that’s something I’m hoping to change in the future. I am witness to so many special moments, and it’s an overwhelming task to try and put together a blog post of favorites. This time I take to reflect on all that happened in my presence in one year is precious to me. A huge thank you to everyone who put their trust in me, this year and next. I hope you enjoy a little look back!
What a year! Thank you again to all of my wonderful couples and their families for choosing us to capture their memories.
